Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. After her father died as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. The school she was attending just two years later in pursuit of acting as a profession. It was a difficult path to take. Although she got an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine, no theatre jobs was offered. The next position she was offered was a "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. Earned money doing shifts during the day, as an usherette. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
